At the start of 2024, humanitarian predictions were bleak. It was expected that nearly 300 million people around the world would need humanitarian assistance and that unresolved conflicts, instability, climate events, disease, and economic inequality would continue to keep millions of people in a state of protracted crisis. Unfortunately, there is no sugarcoating it: these projections became our reality.

As a humanitarian organization, more was being asked of us than ever. From war in Ukraine and Sudan tearing apart families to climate shocks in Bangladesh and Kenya destroying homes, global humanitarian challenges reached a new level of complexity. As is often the case, the most vulnerable individuals – particularly those in the communities we partner with in the hardest-to-reach areas across 25 countries – faced the most devastating effects. Yet, amidst a forecast of mounting climate events, hunger and conflict, Concern continued to work towards a better, brighter future – because of you.

Our Mission in Action

With your generosity, we continued to find innovative and creative solutions to the world’s most complex issues. These solutions went beyond mere problem solving to provide long-term, meaningful change backed by nearly 60 years of experience.

While the world experienced more conflicts than ever before – we continued to provide safe access to essential care wherever possible.

As climate shocks continued to reach emergency levels – we equipped the communities most-affected with the tools and resources they need to adapt and thrive amidst the ever-changing landscape.

And when hunger soared as a result – we provided critical health and nutrition programming to treat and prevent malnutrition.

But ultimately, as global needs reached new heights: we relied on you – our Concern community. As you turned your concern into action, you helped us to reach the world’s most vulnerable communities at the time they needed us most. Together – through our sustainable, community-driven programs – we built lasting change in the fight to end extreme poverty.

Your Impact in 2024

Despite the compounding humanitarian challenges of 2024, your support this past year has made a lasting impact on the lives of the most vulnerable communities around the world. Here are just a few highlights that illustrate what your generosity has made possible:

Relentless conflict has dismantled food systems and critical infrastructure in Sudan, leaving 24.6 million people experiencing acute hunger and 17 areas of the country at risk of famine in the coming months to the backdrop of massive conflict-driven displacement.

With your support, Concern reached over 346,000 people with life-saving aid, including reaching 90 health clinics, equipping them to provide health and nutrition services. Additionally, we delivered cash assistance, food aid, and essential emergency items, including pots, pans, blankets, tarpaulin, soap, and menstrual pads, to displaced families.

Escalating conflict in Lebanon led to widespread displacement, with a reported 1 million people displaced – roughly 20% of the country’s population – with 900,000 people fleeing in one week alone.

With your support, Concern delivered hot meals to displaced families, rehabilitated buildings for safe and dignified shelter for those fleeing conflict, and provided access to providing water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Four consecutive failed rainy seasons in the Amhara and Somali regions of Ethiopia led to crisis levels of hunger, leaving pregnant women and children under 5 at an extremely high risk of malnutrition and death.

With your support, Concern reached 180,000 people with the Emergency Life-saving Health and Nutrition Response program to reduce serious illness and death from malnutrition by strengthening health care systems and increasing mother and child access to care.

Amidst soaring levels of conflict and overburdened health systems, Yemen faced a major and deadly cholera outbreak that infected nearly over 250,000 people.

With your support, Concern rehabilitated water wells, installed 34 toilets to improve sanitation conditions in displacement camps, distributed hundreds of cholera prevention hygiene kits to families, including soap, washing powder, and water purification tablets, and trained a team of 45 community health volunteers across six health facilities.

Deadly flooding left millions stranded in Bangladesh, with over 20 million people across 40% of the country affected by the catastrophe.

With your support, Concern distributed food and essential non-food items such as water purification tablets, sanitary pads, tarpaulin for shelter and oral rehydration solution to approximately 35,000 people in Nohakkahli, one of the worst-affected areas.

Humanitarian Research and Training

For more than a decade, Concern has been providing trainings to improve the effectiveness of the humanitarian system as a whole; ensuring that individuals and organizations responding to crises from Haiti to Somalia have the tools and information they need to deliver stronger, better-coordinated response efforts in the world’s most pressing humanitarian crisis.

This includes the National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL), which provided dynamic training opportunities that help learners take on leadership responsibilities during humanitarian crises. NNPHL trained 309 humanitarians in intensive blended learning programs, including 2,600 humanitarians who received cascade training from intensive participants, and 4,930 users who took the online course in 2024.

Building a Better Response (BBR), which works to strengthen the collective response of humanitarian organizations to get people the help they need when they need it most, hosted trainings from Afghanistan to Pakistan for nearly 200 humanitarians, in addition to reaching 10,000 new learners to the online course in 2024.
