It was attending a Concern golf event that awoke the humanitarian spirit within Scott Gutterson. Shaken to his core about the suffering of the most vulnerable people around the world, he shared with Concern US’s then-CEO Jack Haire that he wanted to be part of the solution to the extraordinary challenges that these people face. Within a few months, Scott joined the Concern US Board and added his voice and energy to Concern’s mission.

These people are no different than any of us, with one exception. We were born in the US.

Scott got to work immediately. His passion for Concern led to donations from business contacts and friends alike. He even went one step further, hosting a cocktail party in his home where he and his wife, Debbie, welcomed 40 people. By the end of the night, they raised well over $55,000 and introduced a new circle of supporters to Concern.

When asked to describe Concern, Scott remarked, “extraordinarily impressive, compassionate — cubed!”

Wanting to understand Concern’s work in an in-depth way, Scott traveled to Chad this August. The trip left an imprint on his mind…and on his heart.

I realized our success cannot be measured in miles. It has to be measured in inches.

While there, Scott met and forged strong relationships with Concern team members and many of the program participants. “These people are no different than any of us, with one exception,” he said. “We were born in the US.” He was especially impressed by how much the Concern staff does everything in its power to improve people’s lives in Chad. Scott was left with an overriding sense that although Chadians face challenges that often seem insurmountable, we are making progress in the country. He observed, “I realized our success cannot be measured in miles. It has to be measured in inches.”

When asked why he continues to stay involved with Concern, he said, “The work is not over yet. The work will never come to an end unless more of us step up and get involved.”
