Why are we in Gaza?

Following the eruption of violence in late 2023, Concern joined our Alliance2015 partner to deliver crucial aid to displaced people in Gaza. A water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and food security project began in May 2024, with the aim of reaching as many people as possible in an extremely fragile context.

Displacement after displacement

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), roughly 90% of Gaza’s population — close to 2 million people — were forced to flee their homes when fighting broke out in October 2023. Thousands have lost their lives and thousands more are still missing.

Livelihoods have been decimated, food systems have been broken, more than 70% of crops have been destroyed, and health and hygiene services have both been brought to the brink of collapse.

Shelter has been monumentally difficult to come by for those who built their lives in Gaza, particularly during the worst of the shelling, with people forced to move location repeatedly since the current crisis erupted.

Latest achievements

  1. Therapeutic food distribution

With financial support from Concern, CESVI (our Alliance2015 partner) distributed ready-to-use therapeutic food to children at serious risk of malnutrition across 11 clinics in Gaza. As of February 2025, an estimated 1,200 children suffering from moderate or severe malnutrition received this treatment.

  2. Water and sanitation

The CESVI team has provided water tanks, constructed and maintained latrines, and carried out waste removal for 22 locations. Many of these sites are hosting displaced Gazans, and over 29,000 people have been reached with this support.

  3. Hygiene

With Concern's support, CESVI have promoted best hygiene practices to reduce the spread of infectious diseases and distributed essential hygiene items, reaching over 19,000 people.
